Naturalization petitions, 1855-1903.

The early files (to around 1880) contain usually two papers for a person petitioning for citizenship. One, the certificate of intention filed some years earlier in a county court, contains the person's name, country of origin, and statement renouncing foreign allegiance. The other paper is an affidavit by an acquaintance certifying to five years residency in the U.S.
